Self-Pollinating

A classic among classics – versatile & reliable!

In 1914, Paul Stark Sr. introduced an apple with no equal: it was sweet, exceptionally juicy, a bit spicy … and it wasn’t red! The tree is an abundant bearer of excellent fresh fruit that, when picked at the perfect ripeness, tastes better than the same apple in a store. A generational favorite for snacking, pies, applesauce and sweet or savory salads. Cold-hardy and heat-tolerant. Discovered by Anderson Mullins in West Virginia. Ripens in late September. Self-pollinating, and also one of the most dependable pollinators for other varieties.

How do I find my Hardiness Zone?

Canada’s Plant Hardiness Zones will tell you which plants will do well in your particular climate. Each zone is determined by the lowest average winter temperature recorded in a given area. Hardiness Zone information is included on all tree and plant product pages, so you know instantly whether a certain plant is likely to succeed where you live. This is year two of my little tree. It showed up as a supreme-sized whip. It currently has several branches, leafed out really well, and is showing lots of growth. I pruned it like Stark Bros. suggested at the beginning of the season and, after that, it really took off. I can’t wait to see what it looks like at the end of the summer!

My tree is going into its third year. It was received as a mere “twig” but has grown to over 6ft tall. I’m pleased with its height but it’s not branching out. I’m just wondering if maybe I’m not doing something right to get it to be a bit fuller and start producing in the next year or two. Overall I’m very pleased though

  3. BARRY WALSBORN

none of the four trees I purchased survived winter

Very happy with my gold delicious tree. I bought it 2 summers ago and was very surprised to see that it’s full of little baby apples this year!

You need to have a lot of golden delicious in your orchard. We have them in the center of our 40 trees and are planning to plant more on both ends. They cross pollinate and so far have been our biggest producer with large apples.
