A popular and reliable producer of sweet, dark cherries!
Brought to the United States from Russia in the 1700’s, this heirloom cherry is a popular choice for good reason! The Black Tartarian Sweet Cherry tree blooms prolifically to yield large crops of cherry-red to purplish-black, heart-shaped fruit.
The sweet, rich flavor of these cherries are perfect for fresh-eating and juicing. This robust tree has such reliable blooms, that it makes for an excellent pollinating partner for any sweet cherry. Black Tartarian is hardy and disease-resistant, making it easy to grow!

How do I find my Hardiness Zone?
Canada’s Plant Hardiness Zones will tell you which plants will do well in your particular climate. Each zone is determined by the lowest average winter temperature recorded in a given area. Hardiness Zone information is included on all tree and plant product pages, so you know instantly whether a certain plant is likely to succeed where you live. Natural Resources Canada provides helpful options to find your zone:
David Hammons –
Even though we followed the directions sent with the trees, only two of the trees ordered survived. The cherries either did not break dormancy or only came out at the base and quickly died. Only one apple and one pear came out this year. The two pears that we bought the year before look great. We won’t buy from Stark’s again.
Joanne Weaver –
Growing slowly but surely. No flower or fruit yet.
Richard Vanvranken –
My plants arrived sound and ready to plant. Unfortunately, wet spring weather prevented planting directly in ground, so I put my 3 trees into large pots. One never leafed out. The other 2 did great, so I planted them in late summer. Unfortunately, a herd of deer found one before I had a chance to protect it, and stripped all the leaves. The second seemed to make it through the fall, but then we had one of the wettest and coldest fall/winter periods on record. None leafed out this spring. Needless to say, I’m a bit disappointed in my attempts to grow cherries, though that’s not the fault of Starks.
Brenda Vanlandingham –
my cherry tree came last year and went through the winter months. It did put on leaves last year but I had an infestation and through my club I was told to spray them with seven powder and that that would take care of my issue. it did. This year they came back they are full and thick and sturdy and have no insects and no spots and no curling leaves they’re just beautiful. I can’t brag enough about Stark Brothers. What a quality company.
Donna Rilling –
The trunk was straight and sturdy when it arrived. I was disappointed in the root system which never took off even though I started with an ample hole and Oscilite. (See Stella commments as the same apply.) Died over winter.
Garry Kimbrell –
I ordered two of these last year. They looked great all summer, lots of nice growth. Neither of them survived the winter. One, the deer knocked over the cage I had around it and shredded it, the other I have no idea. It is just dead.
Donita Acosta –
Did not bloom yet. They are growing and healthy. My blueberries I purchased did not survive. Neither did the lemon tree. I have purchased fruit trees in the past from Starks, and never had any problems.
Arthur Selander –
I ordered two Tertarian cherry trees. They arrived within a week. They were much larger than expected, already leafing out inside the box. Very healthy specimens boxed with plenty of moisture. Highly recommend.
Oksana Kohn –
Good size tree, I bought it last year, it’s growing well.
Douglas Williamson –
Arrived with very little roots. Very disappointing.
